So my mother is going to get a new car soon. She has thus far been a driver (read: scratcher, rim-scraper, fender-benderer) of Range Rovers. She wants either a new RR (big body), or to jump onto the Tesla bandwagon. Now, when I was younger, I used to drive my parents cars all over the place and as such, cared more about what they were. These days, it's not so important to me, as long as she doesn't buy something that's just not worth it. So, my question to you: would you rather a new Range Rover HSE (V6, lets be serious my mom doesn't need a supercharged 5.0) , with the bells and whistles, at somewhere around 100, or a Tesla with the 85kwh battery (not P85, just 85, for range reasons), also with the bells and whistles at somewhere in the low 90s? I'm almost sure I could sway her in either direction...let me know what you think!
(Note: I totally understand and agree with the 99% of you who want to be like "Tesla or a RR? Screw that! Pick up a 993 or like 65 Miatas! Like I said, not my car.)

Depends if she road trips at all. If she doesn't (which I think likely) you could go Tesla. If she goes 3-4x a year to visit her sister 4 hours away....you're going to want to go Range Rover.

is she doing more highway driving? - Tesla
more gravel roads and rough surface - RR
More groceries/errands - Tesla cheaper on gas/ RR more space - dead heat here
Winter season a issue? RR for traction and bulk/ Tesla for cheaper running costs - dead heat
As for her doing damage to vehicles - either will be pricey to fix, RR will have larger sidewalls and tires so less likely to bang a rim but who knows.

She often drives to Toronto from DC to see family. But, she could just take another car for the two or three times a year she does that...

Also...you can't give me or mr_gofast a penny since our country abolished that coin.

I would say Tesla. I've seen several of them around Naperville and they're just sweet looking. I think for someone who wants a nice appliance (sounds like the way you describe your mom), it's a great choice. They're solid, safe, look really sharp, and you don't have to be into cars to like them.
Edit: good choice on the Denver mint penny.

If your mom could deal with the smaller size of the Tesla, surely she could deal with the smaller size of a 2014 RR Sport? The newly redesigned ones are supposed to be fantastic. A lot more maneuverable too, so hopefully less scraping and bumping. Cheaper and better looking than the regular Range IMO. And still great off-road if she needs that.

"RR will have larger sidewalls and tires so less likely to bang a rim but who knows."
Really? Those sidewalls don't look very large.

That's a hell of a drive. I should know I just drove from Cambridge (about 1 hour west of toronto) to DC and then from DC to Ottawa. Honestly if she has got other vehicles at her disposal for the road trippin I would try to get her to go Tesla.
But this could just be me wanting to see one, since I have never seen one before.

Meh, pretty even mix of highway and suburban driving. I already made it clear to her that if she goes Tesla, winter tires are an absolute must when it gets snowy. In my experience, a RWD car on proper snow tires is honestly better than a 4WD on all seasons or summers or whatever they wrap Range Rovers in these days. And the roughest terrain either car will encounter is parking on the grass once a year, haha.

I'd go with the Tesla. Canadian gas prices aren't getting any cheaper, and as much as the RR may be good for the occasional road trip, It's going to spend just as much time idling on the 401 or the DVP in traffic. ;D
Added bonus: Doesn't Ontario give you some sort of major refund for electric cars?
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:10 |

Canada, eh? Well, I can still give you an American penny right? What's that worth in Canada like 300 dollars?
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:10 |

Yeah. It's a good life...when it's not snowing.

How about an Evoque? They're all over the place in Montreal right now because they're just the right mix of size, speed and awesome.

You know, I think I am going to push for Tesla. I mean it's the new thing right? I always support diversifying one's carfolio...

Or me. I was getting gas in kingston when these kids in a van were freaking out because the lady at the station gave them a penny as change... they were all "OMG! IT'S LIKE WE'RE TRAVELING IN TIME!!! WOW". All I could do was laugh. I've got a drawer full of them in my car.

Sorry, I was unclear, we live around DC, she goes up to Toronto.

my honest opinion is that there are better cars for a whole lot less money.
If I was going with a big body SUV I wouldn't take a step further than GMC Yukon, which is awesome (maybe too big though).

Good call. I don't know how the interior space is on the Evoque, but it can't be less than a Tesla.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:17 |

Even better. DC doesn't get nearly as harsh in the winter as further north. It's still a good idea to reshoe the electric horse in winter, though. Nokian and Vredstein make really nice winter rubber, it's decent on highways and not to squirrely in the snow or ice.

For a while it was worth exactly 0.009 cents. now it's back up to around 0.011.

youre right but as compared to Teslas who have low profiles those are bigger lol

You should see the rims on her current Range...a single wheel on that car has more curb rash than all my past and future cars will cumulatively have.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:25 |
|
If most of her trips are under 150 miles round trip (I'm adding a 50 mile buffer) then the Tesla. Even if there are just two long trips a year she could rent a RR for those trips. If there are regular trips exceeding 150 miles the RR then.

If she wants a Range Rover isn't she going to wait for a few months to get one? Earlier this year the waiting list was 4 months.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:28 |

She has a RR Sport right now. She went down from a big body to this current Sport, and wasn't too happy with it. I know the new Sports are supposed to be great, but so are the new big bodies, and since she had a good experience with her last big body, I think that would be the move here.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:29 |

Nope. No Evoque, no way. I am not saying they are bad cars, but definitely not the right cup of tea for her/me/us/our family.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:34 |
|
Yeah, but delivery date for the Tesla is like late September anyhow so it's not really a big deal there...
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:35 |
|
Got you. The new big bodies are awesome as well. Why was she unhappy with this Sport? If it was because of the smaller size then I don't think she'd be too happy with a Tesla.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:38 |

Ah. Got it.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:39 |

Yeah most of her trips are definitely under 150 miles round.

Yep, I love me some Hakkas.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:41 |

I'm not saying you aren't right, but my mom definitely doesn't want a Yukon.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:44 |

Honestly, it just feels like it lacks in quality compared to her old big body. Built off the LR4 platform if I'm not mistaken, doesn't ride great.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:49 |
|
Oh, understood. Yeah, the last gen Sport was not too great in terms of build quality. In that case, both the Tesla and the new big body are very well made and high quality. The Tesla is a lot more fun to drive but she might not appreciate the harsher ride.

She should check out the new MKC, got a bad ass review today!
MKT is unbelievable (yet no one thinks of it)
New Navigator looks awesome.
As you can tell I'm a big fan of US makes. I think I'd even go Audi if I had to leave the US for a vehicle she might be into.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:55 |
|
The only applicable Audi would be a Q7, which really doesn't stack up to the Range, at least for us.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:57 |
|
If only they had an SQ7 like they have an SQ5 you'd be set.
I don't know. Just not a fan of RR's. I feel they are overrated. But, as I always say on here, to each their own. I wish I had anywhere near that kind of cash so I could be even considering them. The price ranges you're talking about are higher than what I paid for my HOUSE 4 years ago.
![]() 06/04/2014 at 10:58 |

The proportions of the Q7 just don't tickle my fancy.

It IS kind of bulbous isn't it? That may be why my company's CEO traded his for a new Raptor. Then again we work on Ford and Audi so his options are limited.
